Stories about MATCH-UP Interfaith Volunteers
Medical escort
A survivor of 12 surgeries — in Boston for further
medical care and living in Charlestown away from family and friends
— needed assistance in getting to
her medical treatments. A MATCH-UP volunteer escorted her home after her
treatments and extended her caring service to help with shopping and errands.
An unlikely match
She's a 21-year-old law student. He is 82 years old, slightly mentally retarded
with a number of physical problems and rarely speaks or responds to others.
She visits this gentleman regularly, takes him on walks and is unfazed by
lack of communication with her match. He is getting needed exercise and companionship;
she finds gratification in giving to another.
Across racial lines
Martha is a frail African-American woman with many medical problems and confined
to a wheelchair who had a longing to go shopping at a mall. Yolanda is an
Asian-American young woman who is willing to walk up 5 flights of stairs
to take down a wheelchair, help Martha get down and into the car and off
to a mall.
A faithful friend
A 74-year-old physician's career came to a halt after a stroke. His wife and
main caretaker requested a volunteer to give her some respite and read to
her husband. A yong professional woman has now gone through five books with
her match who has benefited from the wonderful distraction of reading.
