MATCH-UP Services: One-time and Short-term Assistance

Short-term AssistanceMATCH-UP volunteers aid elderly and disabled adults in Boston and Brookline with one-time or short-term tasks which many of us take for granted. Some are in poor health or lack the mobility to get many simple tasks done. Others don't have a support network such as family or friends to call on when they need assistance. This is where MATCH-UP volunteers can help.

One-time assistance might entail help with going to the barber or hair stylist, visiting a relative in a nursing home, going on a shopping trip, or taking a pet to the vet. Some of these tasks may recur every so often. Short-term assistance may take the form of helping an elder with a broken leg do shopping until the leg is healed, assisting an elder organize his financial affairs, or packing or unpacking an apartment for a move. These tasks can take anywhere from a few hours to several days.

Short-term AssistanceVolunteers often go the extra mile when assisting a senior too. An elderly woman needed help getting a new pair of glasses. Her MATCH-UP volunteer tried to coordinate this trip with a medical appointment but could not synchronize the visits. On their second try, they found the glasses shop closed. The volunteer then made a third trip on her own to get the glasses and deliver them to the senior.

In FY07 we fulfilled 53 requests for one-time and short-term assistance.
