MATCH-UP Services: Strong for Life

Strong for Life

Strong for Life (SFL) trains volunteers to assist frail and disabled elders in their own homes with exercise designed to improve strength, balance, and overall health. Many seniors look forward to the time with their Strong for Life match, as it becomes an important and enjoyable part of the week.

The results have been impressive. Some elders who were ill or had recent surgeries attributed their faster-than-expected recovery to their increased strength and vitality as a result of this program. Overall, many are more talkative and have more confidence in their everyday lives. Stretching and breath work help to increase cognitive awareness and deepen relaxation.

Walking Buddies is MATCH-UP’s newest initiative that focuses on the importance of walking by enabling seniors to take walks comfortably and safely with a volunteer. Walking is a familiar way for elders to add exercise into their daily lives and it is also a great way to socialize. Walking Buddies is part of the Strong for Life program as it enables elders to get the exercise they need to remain strong and stay as independent as possible.

One participant reports, “I had a stroke and I feared I would never stand again or walk. This program has helped me tremendously.”

Another explains, “ Before I started [Strong for Life], I was homebound. I didn’t get out. I didn’t get dressed. I didn’t do anything. Since I’m in the program, I’m ready to get dressed and go out!”

During FY 2008, about 40 individuals in Boston and Brookline participated in the one-on-one weekly SFL exercise program, making strides both physically and emotionally.
